Crystal Zoetrope

This research introduces the Crystal Zoetrope, a miniaturized 3D animation medium designed for seamless integration into everyday objects and environments. While traditional 3D zoetropes offer high realism, they often require bulky structures and complex supports for hundreds of physical objects. To overcome these spatial constraints, this project utilizes Sub-Surface Laser Engraving (SSLE) to etch hundreds of elaborate animation frames directly into a single crystal block. By rotating the crystal via a motor and synchronizing it with high-speed LED strobes, the system generates salient 3D afterimages without the need for individual object supports. The implementation features a crystal zoetrope embedded within a table, protected by an acrylic board and a light cut-off film to ensure visibility in ambient lighting. A touch sensor array integrated beneath the surface allows users to intuitively control animation speed, direction, and brightness. This approach enables the animation of ethereal phenomena like fog or stars and transforms static furniture into interactive, enchanting visual experiences.
