DexController
DexController is a handheld VR controller that leverages grasp as a primary interaction modality to enrich the naturalness of gaming experiences. By integrating a pressure-sensitive surface, the system recognizes two distinct grasp-poses—precision grip and power grip—while simultaneously detecting continuous grasp-force. This dual-layer sensing allows for intuitive mapping between physical actions and in-game functions, such as switching between a sword and a wand based on hand posture or intensifying attack strength through physical pressure. Empirical evaluations via a VR defense game demonstrate that DexController significantly enhances perceived naturalness, spatial presence, and overall game enjoyment compared to traditional button-based interfaces. While the system introduces higher physical demand, users perceive this fatigue as a meaningful "physical challenge" that fosters deeper immersion. This research provides critical design insights for integrating grasping modalities into immersive virtual environments through real-world analogies.
