Shade Painting
This project introduces Shade Painting, a tangible interactive medium that redefines traditional canvas art through structural manipulation rather than pigment application. The system utilizes a multi-layered assembly comprising flexible spandex, a perforated acrylic substrate, and a steel-backed base. By embedding spherical neodymium magnets into the perforated grid, users can modulate the spandex surface to create precise concave deformations. These topographical changes generate varying shadows that form visual compositions across the canvas. This materiality-driven approach offers unique affordances, including high erasability and the ability to customize visual aesthetics by swapping the textile layer. Beyond artistic expression, this research explores the integration of such responsive surfaces into architectural elements like wall partitions and space dividers, enabling users to dynamically personalize their living environments through physical interaction.
