SpatIO

SpatIO is an XR-based physical computing toolkit designed to facilitate a continuous end-to-end workflow for spatial and proxemic interaction prototyping. It addresses the limitations of traditional tools that struggle with precise three-dimensional component placement by integrating extended reality, digital fabrication, and flow-based programming. The system comprises three subsystems: SpatIO Environment for virtual simulation, SpatIO Module for transitioning virtual designs into physical prototypes via pegboard-based positioning, and SpatIO Code for spatial interaction authoring. Through a comparative study with 20 designers, SpatIO was found to significantly shift workflow priorities toward spatial configuration, promote in-situ bodily testing, and enhance the correlation between software logic and hardware placement. By supporting iterative transitions between virtual, mixed, and real phases, it enables designers to overcome real-world constraints and maintain spatiality throughout the entire development process.
