TF-Cells

TF-Cells is a novel metamaterial structure designed to enhance the thermoforming of 3D-printed objects for versatile post-print modification. Traditional 3D prints often struggle with manual deformation due to the low thermal conductivity of standard filaments, which restricts heating to shallow surface areas. By employing a specific beam array geometry, TF-Cells create air channels that significantly increase heat transference from external sources like hot air. This allows users to reach a malleable state in deep and specific regions of a rigid object, enabling both surface-level changes—such as stamping and mechanical fitting—and large-scale form factor alterations like bending, stretching, and twisting. To ensure structural integrity and aesthetic quality, the system includes compound cell designs that integrate solid structures to provide resistance and reduce undesirable deformations like necking. Accompanied by a custom embedding tool, TF-Cells bridge the gap between digital fabrication and hands-on craftsmanship, offering a practical workflow for ergonomic customization and aesthetic tuning in HCI contexts.
