TF-Shell introduces a thermoformable shell structure that enables repeatable, localized, and volumetric physical deformation of 3D-printed prototypes. By leveraging the shape-memory properties of polylactic acid (PLA), this approach allows users to physically "undo" or "save" deformations—bringing digital-like capabilities such as state restoration and shape memorization into the physical fabrication workflow. The system features a specialized design tool with an adaptive zigzag belt-pattern algorithm that ensures both printability and stretchability across complex, freeform geometries. Through softening-based thermoforming rather than melting, TF-Shell supports over 30 cycles of iteration without structural collapse, providing a balanced combination of mechanical robustness and manual flexibility.
