Time to Snow

Time to Snow is an interactive art installation that displays the current time using tiny Styrofoam grains to simulate the aesthetic and ephemeral qualities of snow. The system utilizes a complex pneumatic arrangement—including masking servos, vacuum units, and blowing fans—to accumulate grains onto a screening mesh in the shape of digital numbers. A motion-tracking system with a depth camera enables viewers to interact with the piece through mid-air hand gestures, allowing them to create virtual wind and snowstorms that dynamically erase or scatter the displayed time. This interaction highlights the fleeting nature of the medium, as the accumulated "snow" constantly shifts and never forms exactly the same way twice. By blending mechanical engineering with interaction design, the project evokes the sensory experience of a natural winter environment through a digital-physical clock.
