WonderScope
From July 2018 to December 2022, we participated in the "Science Culture Exhibition Service Infrastructure Technology" project funded by the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT. Over this four-and-a-half-year period, we developed multisensory interaction technologies for science exhibitions based on the design concept of a "Science Stethoscope." The project evolved through three distinct phases:
1. ScienScope (2018-2019): An all-in-one integrated interaction device.
2. SurfaceLens (2020–2021): A smartphone-based app-cessory and dedicated application.
3. WonderScope (2022–2023): A specialized near-surface AR device for immersive science exhibition experiences.
The final iteration, WonderScope, debuted at the 2022 SIGGRAPH Emerging Technologies session, where it received high praise and the Best of Show Honorable Mention Award. It was further recognized with the 2023 iF Design Award in the User Experience category.
(Key Features of WonderScope)
WonderScope is a mobile app-cessory enabling see-through augmented reality directly on exhibit surfaces. By combining RFID tagging with optical displacement and acceleration sensors, it tracks device movement practically without requiring complex external tracking systems or visual patterns. This compact, cylindrical module provides multisensory feedback—visual, auditory, and tactile—minimizing spectator distraction by unifying physical artifacts with digital content. Supported by a Unity-based development template, WonderScope offers a versatile, easy-to-manage solution for immersive experiences in science museums, interactive education, and commercial exhibitions.
